Consultation in West Flanders on the approach to transmigration on parking lots located along highways

2020, September 02

A consultation took place yesterday in the province of West Flanders on the approach to transmigration on parking lots located along highways in West Flanders. The Minister of Home Affairs and Security Pieter De Crem, together with the Flemish Minister in charge of Mobility, Lydia Peeters, consulted with provincial governor Decaluwé, several mayors of cities located in West Flanders, law enforcement agencies and police departments.

In recent months, the public attention has focused mainly on the fight against the coronavirus but that does not mean that other issues have completely disappeared from the agenda. Transmigration is a broad international and social phenomenon that Belgium, being a transit country, is often confronted with. “A coordinated effort and a tailored approach are key to generate an optimal effect. We know that many migrants in transit try to climb into trucks parked next to highways and in doing so, attempt to cross over to the United Kingdom. In that respect, it remains crucial to keep our attention focused on those parking lots located along highways”, said De Crem.

Similar consultations are also scheduled in other provinces in the coming weeks. The next consultation will take place in East Flanders.
