Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on state visit to Belgium

September 19, 2019

The Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi is currently in our country for a three-day state visit. This is the first time since 2007 that a Congolese president in office is visiting our country. After a meeting with the members of the Belgian government at the Egmont Palace, President Tshisekedi was, later that evening, a guest at the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium (FEB) where he gave a speech.

The historical ties between Belgium and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are of course well known. In recent years, there have been a number of differences of opinion between both countries. President Tshisekedi’s state visit should put relations between Belgium and the DRC on a new track. “The historical ties between both our countries cannot be erased. There may and must be differences of opinion but it’s important that each partner deals with these differences in a mature way and sincerely tries to overcome them”, said Pieter De Crem, Belgian Minister of Home Affairs and Security, in a brief response.

Today (Wednesday), the Congolese president will be visiting the city of Antwerp.
