New training center for special police forces opened in Etterbeek

2019, May 20

A new training center for the special forces of the Federal Police opened its doors yesterday in Etterbeek. In the presence of the European Commissioner for Security Julian King, the Minister of Home Affairs inaugurated the new site. The total cost amounted to roughly EUR 900.000 and was financed by means of European funds. Not only Belgian special police forces but also Luxembourg and French elite forces will be able to use it for educational purposes and training.

In his speech, Minister De Crem referred to various attacks perpetrated on the European continent in recent years: “Whether it be Nice, Manchester, Berlin, Brussels, London, … in recent years, our continent has been confronted, all too often and in a too horrific way, with attacks inspired by blind hatred and rage. Organized criminal gangs and terrorist organizations are becoming increasingly professional and audacious. This means that we, as policymakers, must keep up : after all, guaranteeing public order as well as the safety of our citizens is the core mandate of the government. This center will ensure that our elite forces can prepare themselves in the best possible way for the complex and specific operations they will have to carry out”.
