Brussels-North railway station evacuated

2019, May 18

Since yesterday evening, a coordinated socio-sanitary intervention is being undertaken in the Communication Center (railway station of Brussels-North).

The Minister of Home Affairs and Security Pieter De Crem joined forces with Minister De Block as stakeholders at both the regional and local level combined forces with the Mayor of Schaerbeek Clerfayt to provide a structural solution to a growing humanitarian and sanitary problem.

The objective was twofold.

Firstly, to evacuate and close the buildings at level 0, to manage the flow of migrants in the building (access to railway station and shops), to orient people to spots made available within the network of homeless shelters, to intensively clean and disinfect the site, including the arrival and departure platforms used for public transport and to set up a coordinated action to ensure the operation runs smoothly.

Secondly, to restore public order and to make the site available again to commuters and public transport companies.

The Belgian federal police and the railway police will continue to be present at the railway station of Brussels-North to avoid the return of transit migrants. The Minister of Home Affairs and Security Pieter De Crem thanks all parties involved for making this operation possible.
