Belgium remembers | 70 years ago: the Korean War begins

2020, June 25

70 years ago today: the Korean War begins. On 25 June 1950 the North Korean army invades South Korea. In the following three years, almost three million civilians and soldiers were killed.

Among them, more than one hundred compatriots were killed. Between 1951 and 1955, 3.171 Belgian and 78 Luxembourg soldiers would be present on the Korean peninsula to make a Belgian contribution to the Korean conflict.

During the Belgian state visit to the Republic of Korea in March 2019, the sacrifice of those soldiers took centre stage. In the presence of the Belgian Royal couple, Minister De Crem then visited the 'Seoul National Cemetery' to honour these heroes.

However, his commitment goes much further; back in 2012, as the Belgian Minister of Defence, he took the lead in establishing a cooperation project between the Belgian Defence and the Korean Ministry of National Defence Agency for Killed in Action Recovery and Identification (MAKRI). The aim of that project was to identify missing Belgian soldiers during the Korean war.

Let's bring this to our attention today, and jointly reflect on the contribution these people made at that time.
