Minister Pieter De Crem once again competent for foreign trade

2019, October 16

The reshuffling of powers within the Federal government also has consequences for the portfolio of Belgian Minister of Home Affairs and Security Pieter De Crem. Minister De Crem is, as of today, again competent for foreign trade. He previously exercised that power as State Secretary and did so until December 2018.

When the Michel Government took office in 2014, Minister De Crem became State Secretary for Foreign Trade. He exercised that power to everyone’s satisfaction. Under the leadership of (former) State Secretary De Crem, Princely Economic Missions were organized to various destinations such as Peru, Singapore and Qatar, as well as numerous other economic missions to the United States and elsewhere.

Minister De Crem sees one crucial issue to be tackled in the short term with regard to foreign trade : “The Brexit is by far the biggest issue. It will require a lot of attention and energy in the short run, both in terms of security and foreign trade. The United Kingdom is a very important trading partner for our country, not the least with regard to the economic activities in the ports of Zeebrugge and Antwerp. I will therefore do everything in my power to safeguard the interests of our Belgian companies”.
