Today, Their Majesties the King and the Queen together with Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem opened the exhibition Europalia Indonesia 2017 at the Palace of Fine Arts in Brussels. Every two years, Europalia invites adventurous art lovers to discover the history and culture of a new country.

From 10 October to 21 January 2018, the spotlights are on Indonesia. The country is in full economic and artistic prosperity and has since long a close relationship with Belgium, also at the economic level.

In March 2016, a major Princely economic mission went to Indonesia, headed by HRH Princess Astrid and Secretary of State Pieter De Crem. It enabled the more than 300 participants to make new contacts and to seize new trade opportunities. Today, Indonesia has become one of Belgium’s most important Southeast Asian trade partners. We mainly export chemical and mineral products, and machinery and equipment. Imports mainly consist of footwear, textiles and plastics. Belgian companies also deliver world-class expertise in several sectors that are crucial for the development of the Indonesian economy, such as the maritime sector, the agri-food industry, energy and cleantech.

Europalia Indonesia is therefore a next step in bringing our two countries even closer together.
