Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

On Tuesday, the new state-of-the-art production facility of the Japanese chemical company Nippon Shokubai in Zwijndrecht was officially inaugurated, in the presence of Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem, Antwerp port Alderman Marc Van Peel, and the Japanese Ambassador in Belgium.

This investment of 350 million euros is also the largest investment in the company’s history. As Secretary of State De Crem stated in his speech, the choice did not fell on Belgium by chance. Our location and international seaports make our country a true strategic hub and gateway to the European market. As a result, the region around the Port of Antwerp grew into the second largest chemical cluster in the world and Europe’s largest petrochemical center.

In addition, Secretary of State De Crem emphasized that the bilateral trade relations between Japan and Belgium are excellent and continue to build on the momentum created by the State Visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen to Japan in 2016.

The future of our trade relations is also assured, thanks to the recent free trade agreement between the EU and Japan, that will liberalize 97% of our trade. Secretary of State De Crem therefore highlighted the leading role of Japan and Belgium in the world in terms of innovation and sustainable development.
