Monday, January 22nd, 2018

Today, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem welcomed Mr. Jin Liqun the Chairman of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, who was invited at the Federal of Enterprises of Belgium in Brussels.

Mr. Jin is visiting our country on the occasion of the future Belgian membership of the AIIB. The AIIB is a multilateral development bank with the mission to finance infrastructure projects in Asia and beyond. The bank has been active since the beginning of 2016 and its head office is located in Beijing.

By investing in sustainable infrastructure and other productive sectors, the AIIB not only benefits the development of Asian countries, but also offers many opportunities for Belgian companies and supports the Belgian and European economies by strengthening their trade relations with Asian countries.

At the event organized by the FEB, Secretary of State De Crem welcomed Mr Jin. In his speech, Secretary of State De Crem emphasized that our country will help giving direction to the policy of the AIIB and will put a special focus on transparency and sustainable development.

The Belgian membership of the AIIB will of course offer many opportunities to Belgian companies wishing to invest in Asia. Many key sectors in which AIIB invests are also sectors in which Belgian companies have built up unique know-how and expertise. The Belgian membership guarantees that our companies are informed of future projects at a very early stage.
