De Crem promotes the Belgian candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council at the COFCOR-meeting of the Caribbean Community

“Fostering Consensus, Acting for Peace”

Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem participates in the meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community to promote the Belgian candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2019-2020.

The COFCOR meeting gathers all the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community. Secretary of State Pieter De Crem replaces Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders and will elaborate on the Belgian candidacy. If elected, Belgium wants to serve the common interest, under the motto “Fostering Consensus, Acting for Peace”, in accordance with our long commitment within the UN, of which Belgium is a founding member. Our country is also actively involved in assisting the small island states in their fight against the effects of climate change, especially in the Caribbean region.

Belgium also participated in a large number of the 71 UN peace missions since 1948. Also in the period 2007-2014, under former Minister of Defense Pieter De Crem, many Belgian soldiers have contributed to UN peace missions all over the world, including in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Furthermore, Belgium fully invests in strengthening the UN capacities in the fields of mediation, peace building, and the fight against impunity. In this way, we want to contribute to a just and sustainable world that is peaceful and safe and in which everyone can live in freedom and free from poverty.

The Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs devoted a website to the Belgian candidacy, that mentions who we are and what we stand for. All info can be found on
