Inauguration of the direct connection between Brussels and Mumbai

Network mission to Mumbai led by Secretary of State Pieter De Crem

The network mission headed by Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem departed this morning from Zaventem to Mumbai, the commercial, financial, and entertainment capital of India. This departure was also the perfect occasion to officially inaugurate the new direct connection between both countries.

Brussels Airlines, in cooperation with Air India, will fly five times a week between Brussels and Mumbai. The creation of this new connection is the result of close discussions between the airlines and governments of both countries. Last year during a previous mission to India, Secretary of State De Crem discussed the possibilities for a direct line between Belgium and India with the Indian Minister for Air Transport. A topic that was also on the agenda shortly thereafter during the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Michel.

This connection is excellent news for Belgium, and Zaventem in particular. In addition to the creation of some 200 jobs at Brussels Airport and many new jobs at suppliers, it will connect our country with one of the world’s most important economic growth poles. Furthermore, it confirms the image of Belgium as an exporting country, that seizes every opportunity to grow and to innovate.
