State Visit to Portugal

October 2018

Their Majesties the King and the Queen, together with Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Pieter De Crem, will visit Portugal from 22 to 24 October 2018. An important economic delegation will be part of this State Visit and will focus on our bilateral trade relations with this important European partner.

Our rich cultures and histories are interconnected and have influenced the history of Europe and the world. The current political ties between our two countries are built on our shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and international cooperation. Indeed, Belgium and Portugal are convinced EU members, founding NATO allies and active UN member states. As a non-permanent member of the UNSC in 2019-2020, Belgium is looking forward to working closely with the UNSG António Guterres.

The State Visit will further strengthen these ties and continue the century-old cooperation between our countries. During three days the visit will allow for political contacts at the highest level, knowledge sharing, cultural exchange and the promotion of economic ties to the benefit of both our countries. Hence one can only conclude, "Belgium and Portugal, good friends in times of prosperity, strong allies in times of adversity".
