Belgium elected to the UN Security Council in 2019-2020 with 181 votes

“Fostering Consensus, Acting for Peace”

The Kingdom of Belgium has been elected today for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2019 – 2020 with 181 votes in favor. Belgium wants to serve the common interest, under the motto “Fostering Consensus, Acting for Peace”, in accordance with our long commitment within the UN, of which Belgium is a founding member.

Our country has already seated five times before in the UN Security Council (1947-48, 1955-56, 1971-72, 1991-92, 2007-08). Belgium also participated in a large number of the 71 UN peace missions since 1948. Also in the period 2007-2014, under former Minister of Defense Pieter De Crem, many Belgian soldiers have contributed to UN peace missions all over the world, including in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Secretary of State De Crem strongly supported the Belgian candidacy, by participating in the meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community and the summit between the European Union and the ACP countries in the Togolese capital. During his bilateral contacts in Belgium, he also convinced many countries of the strengths of the Belgian program, which focuses on fostering consensus and acting for peace.
