Inauguration of the new NATO building in Brussels

Thursday, May 25th, 2017

On Thursday 25 May 2017, US President Trump inaugurates the new NATO headquarters in Brussels, together with the 28 other leaders of the NATO member countries and new member state Montenegro.

Construction of this building of the newest generation took almost 7 years and Belgian Defense acted as supervisor. Pieter De Crem, Belgian Minister of Defense at the time, signed the contract with the building firm in June 2010 and lay the first brick of the new building, together with former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in December of the same year.

The headquarters has state-of-the-art communication and security facilities. The all-glass structure offers a lot of brightness and transparency. The use of the latest construction techniques coupled with an economical heating system and the availability of green roofs will reduce the complex’s energy footprint. The headquarters will accommodate 4,500 employees and will be responsible for tens of thousands of indirect jobs. The new building also recalls the unique link between Belgium and NATO.
